Are Potty Training Dolls Useful?

by Paul J James

Parents are always on the look-out for tools to help make potty training easier. One of the tools available is the potty training doll.

The Concept

Dolls that wet have been around for ages. The doll “drinks” a bottle of water and then wets into a diaper. The potty training doll is the same concept only it’s designed to “wet” when it’s held upright over a potty chair or toilet. The theory is, if the child sees the doll using the potty, she will get the idea and use the potty herself. There isn’t any hard and fast research either way on the effectiveness of the dolls in potty training a child.

Worth a Shot?

If the price of the doll is within your budget and you feel your child will respond positively to it, by all means give it a try. If, for some reason, your child doesn’t like it or is frightened by it, don’t use it again.

Anything that makes potty training easier should be explored and used if your child responds favorably to it.If you’re looking for a doll for your child, here’s just the one for you. Corolle has come out with a vanilla scented potty training doll called Emma. Emma is cute and cuddly to look at, dressed in pink and white, and comes with a potty, a feeding bottle and even a diaper. For those wishing to potty train a boy, there’s a doll called Paul - an anatomically correct boy baby doll Main features are:

- Corolle’s potty training dolls are of excellent quality
- There is a girl potty training doll Emma and a boy potty training doll Paul
- The potty training dolls come with lots of useful accessories
- The potty training process is simplified with the help of these dolls
- Both the potty training dolls are anatomically correct Both Emma and Paul are vanilla scented.

The potty training dolls come with their own feeding bottles and other accessories and has it’s own potty. Emma is dressed in baby pink and Paul is dressed in blue and Paul, the boy potty training doll, is anatomically correct Corolle dolls are of exceptionally good quality, and follow all the safety guidelines for dolls. I highly recommend Emma or Paul as a potty training doll for your child. If you are looking for ideas and options for your training, this might be the answer.

Understanding Autism

by Victor Raff

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the name of the group of serious problems with development that are caused by a problem in a young child’s brain. The disorder often surfaces before the age of three, continuing on into adulthood. Being able to recognize and treat the disorder early can positively affect the severity of it. All Autism forms affect communication and interaction abilities with people. No one knows the causes of ASD, nor does anyone know how to prevent or cure it. The key is to be able to treat autism as early as possible.

Symptoms and Signs: Autism reveals itself in crucial areas of development. Children with Autism may have problems with social interaction, language and behavior. They may have difficulty learning, or have different ways of learning, difficulty with paying attention or reacting to things. Certain behaviors might be repeated. Children show signs of Autism in early childhood/infancy.

Common signs of Autism are, socially: having no response, or little, when a child hears their name called, avoiding eye contact, seeming to not hear you talking, a resistance to being held or cuddled, perhaps only cuddling when they are so inclined, seemingly unaware of another person’s feelings, wanting to be solitary (in their own world), and having difficulty with showing their feelings or emotions.

Language signs of Autism are: Delayed development in talking, losing learned ability to speak a sentence or sentence fragment, avoids eye contact when requesting something, talks in a strange tone or rhythm, is not able to start a conversation or keep one going, could repeat a sentence verbatim, but not be able to facilitate it, may have a hard time expressing what they need.

Behavioral signs are: A child may repeat and action time and again, for example, rocking or hand flapping, having a specific schedule or ritual, and getting upset if that schedule is disturbed, constantly moving. A child could also be enthralled with an object’s moving parts, can be hypersensitive to sound, light and touch, while being unaffected by pain, may also lack intuition to point at interesting objects, such as a helicopter flying overhead.

If your child loses a skill at any age, call your doctor right away. Ask to be referred to a developmental pediatrician. Being proactive as quickly as possible will be the key to making a difference.

How to get your Body Ready to Lose the Pregnancy Weight

by Teresa Brown

Pregnancy varies from one woman to the next. However, most pregnant women tend to let down their guard regarding watching what they eat. This is especially so when they have cravings for foods that are not too healthy. The secret to lose the pregnancy weight like the Celebrity Mom is by not gaining more pounds than you should during your pregnancy.

Pregnancy and food go hand in hand like food and obesity. However, a pregnant mother sometimes forgets that she’s in danger of gaining too much weight because she’s eating for two. Two is more than one but your focus should be on your food’s quality and not its quantity for your baby’s proper growth and development.

Pregnancy and healthy eating are inseparable. However, a ravenous pregnant mother might forego her healthy eating habits and opt for junk food and this can put her in danger of packing on the pounds. Putting on too much weight during your pregnancy can put you at risk for various pregnancy miseries such as hemorrhoids, gestational diabetes, stretch marks and varicose veins. All of which will only make your pregnancy and ability to lose the pregnancy weight more unpleasant.

One of the many benefits to being pregnant is that you can eat more because you are eating for two. However, you really only need to increase your daily caloric intake to 300 calories for a healthy baby. Although pregnancy may seem like a good reason to eat more of everything, you have to stick to your healthy eating habits. This will keep those guilt-free pregnancy pounds from making you overweight and hence decreasing the work required to lose the pregnancy weight.

We are told to listen to our bodies. So if your pregnant body is telling you to eat, then you should eat. But you should feed your hunger with healthy food choices instead of just grabbing a bag of Doritos. When you maintain a healthy pregnancy weight now you will lose the pregnancy weight more rapidly later and be healthier for it.

The sensible Mom makes sure that her diet is healthy. Your baby comes first. It’s that elementary. Try to avoid foods that are high in preservatives, sugar, salt and unhealthy fats. Instead try to eat local or organic produce and lean meats if and when possible. Healthy foods should be a way of life for you and your family.

What better way to combat your food cravings than to eat several meals every day. By spreading out your meals from three big ones to six small ones, your diet will be more nutritionally rich and your tendency to go for the fast foods will be reduced. Eating more small meals will make you eat less and get your body more prepared to lose the pregnancy weight in no time.

Another powerful way to lose pregnancy weight fast is to exercise throughout your pregnancy. Not all women can do this but for those who can, it gives you an advantage to losing the pregnancy weight more quickly after giving birth. With the approval from your doctor, aim to do between 20 to 30 minutes of fat burning exercise four times a week. From swimming to yoga, there is an exercise for you. All you have to do is to treat your body to a regular dose of exercise.

Why make your ability to lose the pregnancy weight more difficult when you can make it easier by living a healthy lifestyle? All you need to do is to eat less more often and to exercise daily. Your baby is worth it and so are you.

6 Ideas For Teaching Children To Write Poetry

by Zacharias Allred

Children can learn to write poetry when they are shown the basics. It does not matter if you are a parent or a teacher. Here are 6 steps to get you started.

1. Word list. At home or at school you can make a list of words that rhyme. Make the words fun for kids like: clown, frown, smile, mile, snail, sail, grand, stand etc. Next have the kids try to make sentences out of a couple of the words.

2. Recite sentences to the kids. After the children have had time to make some sentences and you have made a couple your self have everyone recite a couple. Kids need to hear the words rhyming. This should be fun as kids can come up with some funny rhymes.

3. The Bible. The Bible is the most widely read book in the world. It is written in prose and parts of it are quite beautiful. You can read parts of the Bible a loud and discuss why it is considered poetry. As an exercise you can have the children try to imitate some of the verses.

4. Poems about grandparents. Try having the children write poems about things and people they are very familiar with like grandparents. Other topics could be pets and toys. The idea is to help them identify with the subject matter for their poems.

5. Rhyming games. An effective method for teaching kids poetry is to use games. Nursery rhymes are some of the first poetry we hear. You can read some of these to the kids and have them stomp their feet and clap to the rhythmic pattern they hear. Be prepared for some noise but this is very effective.

6. Music. Play different musical selection and point out how the lyrics blend like the words in poems. There are often rhymes used. This will help the older kids become more interested in poetry when they realize that their favorite musical groups adhere to many forms of prose in their music.

Teaching children to write poetry is simple when approached in steps. First, you need to start with simple poetry that only focuses on rhyming words in simple sentences. After children have the basics down you can show how poetry is used in the Bible and music. Give kids ideas for poems by giving them ideas to write on like pets.

Cloth Diapers - Why They Are the Right Choice for Your Baby

by Jen Stoddart

Being a parent of a baby is wonderful - even though your baby will live their first two years wearing diapers. Our main priority as moms and dads is looking out for our baby. Because our lives are so busy - we are all looking for ways to make things easier. And sometimes the choices that we make aren’t always the correct one.

The choice of diaper type that we as parents make can have a positive or negative influence on our child’s health, their comfort, and the health of the world that we live in. And there is a great deal of money to be saved when people choose cloth diapers over disposable-style diapers.

Here are 7 great reasons for choosing cloth-style diapers over disposable-style diapers.

1. Healthier for baby - disposable diapers are made with the super absorbent chemical, sodium polyacrylate, which absorbs and holds fluids in the diaper. This chemical has been linked to toxic shock syndrome. Another chemical concern is Dioxin. Traces of the carcinogen Dioxin have been found in disposable diapers. Dioxin causes liver disease, immune system suppression and genetic damage. It is a by-product of the paper-bleaching process used in the making of this type of diaper.

2. Lower possibility of diaper rash for your baby. Disposable diapers are made of very dense material, while cloth diapers are made of breathable cotton. This means that you baby will be cooler, thereby reducing the build up of bacteria growth which lowers the possibility of a rash. Babies that wear cloth diapers get changed more often because they will feel wet to the touch when the baby is wet. Disposables on the other hand are so absorbent that even when the baby is wet the diaper may not feel wet and therefore the baby will not be changed as often. This will result in a greater chance of the baby developing a diaper rash.

3. Comfort for baby - today’s cloth baby diapers are made of several layers of 100% soft cotton flannelette. More and more parents are choosing 100% cotton for their baby’s clothing as natural cotton fibres FEEL BETTER. Not only is 100% cotton known to be more comfortable, it’s cooler and more natural to your skin, especially on sensitive body parts. Unlike disposable diapers, cloth child diapers stay cool even on the hottest summer day.

4. Save money - raising a baby is expensive and we all want to save money when we can. There have been numerous studies that compare the costs of purchasing disposables versus the cost of purchasing and washing cloth baby diapers at home. The results of the studies vary but they all agree that the cost of cloth, home laundered diapers, is considerably lower than buying disposables. Consider that over a 2 1/2 year period where there will be approximately 7,500 diaper changes, the savings of cloth over disposables is in the range of $1,000 to $2,000. This savings is even greater when you consider that the same diaper can be used for another baby. In our case - in Holden’s first year we have saved over $800 by using cloth. Think of what you could do with the SAVINGS you earned from buying and laundering your own diapers!

5. Better for the environment - it is probably obvious that cloth diapers are better for the environment since they are reusable. Here are some more issues to consider. A good quality cloth diaper can be laundered at least 100 times. If you are having more than one baby they can be used for your second and third child. It does take energy to launder the baby diaper, but the energy used is a small fraction of what a disposable diaper does to the environment. It is estimated that a disposable will take 400 to 500 years to decompose in our landfills. The companies that make today’s disposables will use over 1 million metric tons of wood pulp and 75,000 metric tons of plastic each year. What a cost to our environment.

6. Easy to change - today’s modern cloth diapers have snap or Velcro closures, and adjust for the size of your baby. When using the all-in-one cloth diapers it is easy for anyone to change the baby. Even Holden’s grandpa (JoPa) can make the diaper change without any complaints from baby or JoPa.

7. No outer diaper cover required - today there are all in one diapers that have a built in waterproof outer cover meaning that there is no need for a diaper cover.

Being More Than a Sperm Donor: What Dads Need to Know Now!

by Christy Cuellar-Wentz

1. I doubt you were a great lover your first time out, so why would you expect to know how to be a great dad without any practice? You may not know it yet, but fatherhood can be a lot more fulfilling than donating sperm! Relax, give yourself some time to learn, and have some fun along the way.

2. Hands-on fathering is good for you, your partner and your baby. It’s not just about changing diapers. Feeding, bathing, holding and talking to your little one helps you bond together and gain essential on-the-job training.

3. Your wife will be herself again. Yes, she is probably on duty 24 hours a day with baby on the brain. No, she probably isn’t much fun right now. But life will return to normal as the three of you adjust to your new situation.

4. Your wife still needs you. Stay nearby and be patient. You may not recognize the woman you partnered up with 9 or 10 months ago, but she is still in there.

5. Sex life tanked? It’s only temporary. You can have sex again. With your wife. A little time will help heal her up and the two of you can enjoy each other again like you used to.

6. Nobody deserves postpartum mood disorders, and nobody causes them either. Don’t blame each other when the going gets tough. Know that many symptoms will pass on their own in a couple of weeks, and all are treatable.

7. Sleep helps. Your wife is probably getting a fraction of the sleep she used to. You may be on the light side as well. Helping each other get more sleep is one of the most important things you can do to help everyone feel better.

8. Trust your instincts. Different “experts”, including the guy in line at the grocery store, will tell you to handle your baby a different way. Trust yourself, your wife and your baby to tell you what you need to know.

9. You have full permission to play! In fact, your baby needs you to play with him (or her) in order to grow. So act like a kid and stimulate your little one’s mind and body at the same time.

10. The advent of a new baby is stressful. Even miracles create challenges. Things should get smoother with a little time. If your lives don’t get better, or if you or your wife feels worse, ask for help!

Negative Effects Of Homeschooling

by Albert Wellsom

Homeschooling is becoming an increasingly popular option with many American families. Not only are you in full charge of the homeschool curriculum, you can even adjust it according to the needs of your child and completely forget about the trauma of attending a public school. Teaching your children at home can be accomplished several ways. There are three options: 1) Purchase a program from one of the homeschool curriculum providers, or buy used homeschool curriculum 2) Read to your child from great books, and explore the world together paying attention to what interests your child or 3) Design your own homeschool curriculum for free using the internet and the library. Teach your kids to get more organized. Award the kids for doing a good job.

There are however, consequences to schooling your child at home - sometimes it can affect their mental and social development. Children need friends, usually, they meet their friends in school so take a child out of school and where will they meet potential play partners? What will the other kids think of your homeschooled child? Like it or not, children in public schools often think that homeschooled children are not in public school because of mental disorders, behavioral problems, or “freaky” parents. Your child might be made fun of or picked on because he isn’t considered normal. These challenges must be overcome if you want your child to have a positive social life and be able to function amongst their peers when they get to college.

When you decide to homeschool the child, also take care of his companionship needs and this as important as his academic needs. For the child to have a positive social sphere later, here are some tips that would help you to put him on the right path. The best place to start is your own environment and neighborhood? How many children of the same age as your child live around your home? Do you know their parents? If not, try to get going now. Seek out parents nearby and let them know you have a child that you’d like to set up a play date. Because you have started the process, it is also up to you to take the initiative of organizing a kid party and calling a clown perhaps. Invite all the local kids over, their parents and organize a ballgame, fishing, bowling, or any other activity that children enjoy - even offer to baby-sit.

It is critical to organize sporting activities as, other than school, these are best chances which children get to make true friends. They spend a lot of time at practice and root for each other in games and you’ll be meeting other parents while watching all the games. If your child has physical problems or would embarrass himself on a playing field, get them involved in activities like Boy/Girl Scouts or any other local organization for children.

Some parents make the mistake of believing that homeschooling their children means they can keep them safe from the outside world but this too is an unhealthy attitude. While it is good to protect your kid from the so-called evils of modern society, remember the child also needs exposure to things which other kids are exposed to. Already your kid is getting branded as a ‘funny’ kid and having problems to cope with it, can you imagine where it would land him in the social circle if he was clueless about TV shows, the latest bands or even the current kid fashion trends? If they don’t learn about life outside their home and make other friends they will have a difficult time integrating into the world you so much want them to succeed in.

Lose Your Tummy Without Being a Weight Loss Dummy

by Teresa Brown

Sometimes stereotypes make sense like: size does matter or faster is better! Losing pregnancy weight isn’t rocket science especially if you get the basics down. Follow these two stereotypes to burn the baby fat faster.

Size is important:

Portion sizing is one of the oldest tricks in the book but it works. These days most restaurants pile your plate full of food and fast food joints have bigger sizes and bottomless cups. It might be hard to get away from this over indulgent culture but when you do sit down to eat, try to have smaller portions but more varieties of fare.

Instead of wolfing down a big meal after starving yourself all morning, try and plan to have smaller nutritious meals scattered throughout your day. By doing this you will raise your metabolic rate by making sure you are always supplying energy for your body. Aim to balance out your food groups and this includes the often tabooed carbohydrates!

Faster is better:

Our bodies can get used to our daily cardio routines especially if we do the same thing day in and day out. Lose your tummy by doing some quality high intensity interval training. Pacing yourself with a jog and then increasing the speed with a short sprint will help you lose the pregnancy weight faster.

If you are in a school gym, try and do those basketball lines by sprinting to one and jogging back to the other. If you are at a park, try and sprint up the stairs while walking around the field. Wherever you are, try and move back and forth from quick sprints to short jogs.

New moms are barraged with new diets and fad exercise schemes but sometimes the old stereotypes apply when trying to lose your tummy. Don’t get stuck with expensive gym bills or complicated recipe diet books when all you need is a well-designed meal plan and an organized exercise schedule!
